The Floor

While linoleum is an outdated option, the material is cheap and able to retain a great deal of wear and tear. If you want the same advantages of the floor without the outdated look, consider vinyl floors. They are averagely priced when compared to other types of flooring materials and can remain strong even through extensive wear, tear, spills, and dropped dishes. Vinyl flooring also has the advantage of looking a lot like real wood once it is installed, to give the appearance of a more modern look.

Open Space 

If you have a relatively small kitchen, then it only makes sense that you want to make the most of the space you do have. This may mean choosing cabinets that reach the ceiling and placing an island in the middle of the room to allow for more seating. In your attempt to utilize your space, you may forget to leave enough room in your kitchen to allow for walking and access to other rooms through doorways and other walkways. 

Some renovation experts will advise for about three feet of space along each walkway. However, three and a half to four feet is often a bit better to give yourself some breathing room around islands, counters, and appliances.
